Celebrations in Kamień Pomorski

The Cathedral of Kamien Pomorski as ‘Historic Site with importance for Physics’

 of the European Physical Society

The celebration of unveiling a commemorative plaque with the ‘EPS Historica Site’ title (‘Physics Historic Site’ of the European Physics Society) was held in Kamień Pomorski on 11 October 2013. It took place on the 268th anniversary of the construction of a device for collecting electricity- the Kleist bottle (also the Leyden jar)- by Ewald Georg Jürgen von Kleist, the dean of the cathedral. The main part of the celebration was conducted by the Mayor Bronisław Karpiński and the commemorative plaque was unveiled by EPS representatives: prof. Maciej Kolwas, the PPS President-elect prof. Katrzyna Chałasińska-Macukow and the PPS Szczecin Branch chairman prof. Mariusz Dąbrowski. The ceremony was also attended by: prof. Michael Müller-Preussker (the President of the Berlin Physical Society), prof. Gebhard von Oppen (representative of the German Physical Society ) and Mr. Sigurd von Kleist, representative of the Kleist family. The invited guests were able to listen to an organ concert in the cathedral, visit the interactive exhibition on electricity at Muzeum Historii Ziemi Kamieńskiej and take part in a special City Council session devoted to the life and work of E. Von Kleist. ‘The work of Ewald von Kleist and its consequences for the developmentof science’, a two-day conference in Pobierowo, was the last part of the celebrations. The conference involves sessions on the history and philosophy of physics, problems concerning the energy sources in contemporary world and physics teaching.
