Professor ZDZISŁAW WILHELMI, Honorary Member and long-time PPS President, is dead

On December 27, 2013 died Professor Zdzislaw Wilhelmi.

During the war Z. Wilhelmi was engaged in underground activities in Łomża since October 1939 (Polish Victory Service, Union of Armed Struggle, Home Army). The Head of the Łomża Home Army District Intelligence took active part in the Operation “Tempest’.  He studied at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Lviv, until the outbreak of war and after the war he continued his studies at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Łódź Technical University, where he earned a master degree in electrical engineering. After graduation he worked as a senior assistant at the Department of Atomic Energy, Warsaw University, and at the same time studied physics at the Faculty of Physics UW. In 1954 he received a doctorate degree in physics, and in 1956 Centralna Komisja Kwalifikacyjna granted him the degree of a docent. Later he received the degree of an associate professor (1962) and full professor of physical sciences (1971).

While working at the Faculty of Physics UW, since 1955), he also got engaged in the organization of the newly-created National Centre for Nuclear Research , where he became head of the Department of Nuclear Physics, and later the Department of Nuclear Reactions. In years 1970-1980 he supervised the safety of nuclear energy and nuclear research in the world as a Head of the Department in the International Atomic Energy Agency. Once his mission in Vienna was over, he became the Head of the Department (later Division) of the Nuclear Physics, University of Warsaw. He retired in 1991.

He Publisher over 300 scientific articles in journals with a global circulation, devoted to nuclear physics. This active lecturer at many international conferences was a teacher to many Polish nuclear physics physicists. He supervised almost fifty doctors of physics, most of whom was awarded the title of professor.

He played a vital role as a Home Army combatant. He was a member of the World Association of the Home Army Soldiers and a chairman of the Białystok Branch of the Polish Home Army Ex-Servicemen Association in Warsaw. In years 1990-1993, as a member of the Executive Board he directed the Commission on Education and Youth and the Civil Initiatives Team, in years 1996-1999 he was a member of the Governing Council of the World Association of the Home Army Soldiers.

Since 1974 the President of the Polish Physical Society for three consecutive terms. PPS honorary member. He chaired the Nuclear Physics Section of Komitet Fizyki PAN. He was a member or an honorary member of e.g. American Physical Society, Institute of Physics in Great Britain, New York Academy of Sciences, European Physical Society.

He was awarded the Officer's Cross and Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and he  also received the Golden Badge of Merit of the Governing Council of the Home Army. 

He will always remain in the memory of the Polish Physical Society.
